A popular member of the Alderley Edge community passed away on Monday 25th June at the age of 90.

Margaret Melrose was chairman of Tatton Conservative Association from 1999-2001 and again in 2004.

She was a county councillor for 34 years and was chairman of the county council (which at the time was Cheshire County Council) on two occasions.

Having been first elected in 1967 as a councillor, in 1984 she became the first woman to hold the position of chairman.

She worked with both George Osborne and Nicholas Winterton and was a tireless campaigner for the Alderley Edge Bypass, which in 2011 was named Melrose Way in her honour.

A spokesperson for the local Conservatives said: “Margaret will be sorely missed, and our sympathies go out to her family at this very difficult time.”

Margaret’s funeral will take place on Wednesday 11th July 2018 at St Mary’s Church in Nether Alderley at 11am.
