A new, free-of-charge programme is set to launch in part of Lincolnshire, providing support to people living with musculoskeletal conditions.

The scheme, backed by West Lindsey District Council and Everyone Active, will begin in January at two local leisure centres – Market Rasen Leisure Centre and West Lindsey Leisure Centre.

It is aimed at people living in areas of deprivation who are on a waiting list for hip or knee surgery, and currently out of work or at risk of being off work.

People who are successfully referred will receive a six-month subscription to their local leisure centre as well as health checks during that period.

Classes will be tailored to individual participants, with potential activities including gym support sessions, aquatic circuits, toning suite, seated exercise, escape-pain classes and pain cafes.

The programme will focus on improving physical, mental, emotional and social well-being.

The activities are designed to help strengthen muscles, enhance cardiovascular fitness plus support balance, flexibility and coordination.

People will also have the chance to attend social and peer-supported sessions, which are designed to help with managing pain and improving overall health.

This in turn will help people with their mindset, emotional wellbeing and social connection with others, bosses say.

Fit for Surgery

The scheme, known as Fit for Surgery, is being funded by Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board and Lincolnshire Voluntary Engagement Team, and will be delivered for a minimum of 12 months.

“The upcoming launch of this programme is great news for those living with musculoskeletal conditions in the local community,” said Chris Duncan, Everyone Active’s regional activity and wellbeing manager.

“It will improve the physical and mental health of patients before surgery, leading to better outcomes and a smoother recovery.

“We support people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels and this exciting scheme is a wonderful example of that, which numerous people will benefit from.”
