Our local libraries in Cheshire will be varying their opening hours over the Christmas holidays – read on for more details.
Membership cards issued by any library in Cheshire West or Cheshire East can be used to borrow books from any of the other libraries in Cheshire West and Cheshire East.
As well as this, library membership in Cheshire East and Cheshire West is free of charge, and is available to anyone with a UK address.
Here’s when libraries near you will be open this Christmas:
Storyhouse (Chester)
Storyhouse will be open from 8am until 8pm on Christmas Eve, closed on Christmas Day, then open from 10am until 8pm on Boxing Day.
It will be open 8am-11pm on 27th December and 9.30am-11pm on 28th December, then 8am-11pm on 29th and 30th December.
On New Year’s Eve, Storyhouse is open from 8am-8pm and it will then be closed on New Year’s Day, before reopening as usual from 2nd January.

Cheshire West libraries
Cheshire West libraries are located in Barnton, Blacon, Ellesmere Port, Frodsham, Great Boughton, Helsby, Hoole, Hope Farm, Lache, Little Sutton, Malpas, Neston, Northwich, Sandiway, Tarporley, Tarvin, Tattenhall, Upton, Weaverham, Wharton and Winsford (as well as Storyhouse in Chester).
Over the Christmas period, libraries in Cheshire West will be operating as follows:
- 24th December 2025: Libraries close at 1pm (except Storyhouse, closes at 8pm)
- 25th December 2025: All libraries closed
- 26th December 2025: Libraries closed (except Storyhouse, 10am-8pm)
- 27th December 2025: Libraries closed (except Storyhouse, 8am-11pm)
- 28th December 2025: Libraries closed, (except Storyhouse, 8am-11pm)
- 29th December 2025: Libraries closed, (except Storyhouse, 8am-11pm)
- 30th December 2025: Ellesmere Port, Frodsham, Neston, Northwich, Upton and Winsford libraries open as usual (plus Storyhouse)
- 31st December 2025: Ellesmere Port, Frodsham, Neston, Northwich, Upton and Winsford libraries open until 5pm (and Storyhouse open until 8pm)
- 1st January 2026: All libraries closed
- 2nd January 2026: All libraries open as usual
School and community libraries will be operating as follows:
- Malpas (High School) will be closed from 7pm on Thursday 18th December 2025, reopening at 1.30pm on Tuesday 6th January 2026.
- Tarporley (High School) will be closed from 7pm on Thursday 18th December 2025, reopening at 1.30pm on Monday 5th January 2026.
- Hoole Library will be closed from 5pm on Monday 22nd December 2025, reopening at 2pm on Monday 5th January 2026.

Cheshire East libraries
Cheshire East libraries are located in Alderley Edge, Alsager, Bollington, Congleton, Crewe, Disley, Handforth, Holmes Chapel, Knutsford, Macclesfield, Middlewich, Nantwich, Poynton, Prestbury, Sandbach and Wilmslow.
All libraries in Cheshire East will be closed from 1pm on 24th December 2025. They will remain closed on 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th December 2025.
Cheshire East libraries will be operating their normal opening hours on 29th and 30th December 2025.
All libraries will then be closed from 5pm on 31st December 2025 and remain closed on 1st January 2026. Normal opening hours resume on 2nd January 2026.
There will be no volunteer sessions at Alderley Edge Library on 16th, 23rd and 30th December 2025 and 6th January 2026, so the library will be closed from 1.30pm on those dates.
